Which of the following is not a recommendation for locomotor training after spinal cord injury?
a. Maximize weight-bearing through lower extremities
b. Select walking speeds as close to “normal” as possible
c. Minimize compensatory strategies
d. Minimize level of assistance with use of appropriate bracing
Correct answer is D, though I though the answer was C.
With current literature on high intensity gait training, there is a large push to disregard kinematics and compensatory strategies and focus more on functional outcomes of gait training. Also, some of the literature on bracing (i.e. AFO and FES CPG) recommends to brace patients early to allow for increased repetition and joint protection with therapy. Is there a particular piece of literature this question/answer is referring to? Also, I am wondering if the upcoming NCS exam will emphasize current literature on high intensity gait training (i.e. from Moore, Henderson, and Hornby)?
Hi Masato! Thanks for pointing this out! This question stems from some of the older literature like the Sullivan (2002) and Duncan (2011) articles and needs to be updated to reflect the latest CPG and literature! I’ve added it to my list to review!
